NUBEE Model NUB8580 IR Thermometer
First up is a passive point and shoot IR thermometer good for measuring a variety of surface temperatures. How hot is that skillet siting on the burner? The dial says medium but where is it exactly? If your pan searing a good steak in a cast iron skillet it’s good to know. NUBEE makes a variety of point and shoot thermometers and this is a good choice. The model we chose is the NUB8580 available from Amazon. Very well rated, it can be used for many other tasks than measuring cooking temperatures. The product manual is rather poor so it takes some time to set up. Other than that it works great and you can calibrate your entire kitchen with it. Accuracy is very good rivaling devices costing many times more. And while the construction is very good, the unit isn’t really intended for heavy industrial use. But overall good for home and kitchen usage.
RisePRO Touchscreen Meat Probe Thermometer
Now that the kitchen is calibrated, time to cook. The second entry in our cast iron cooking temperature utensils is a meat thermometer. This unit is distributed through several brand names, but we have a RisePRO which we picked up from Amazon. This is a gtreat little thermometer the can be used for oven, smoker, BBQ, or grill. Sporting a nicely backlit touch display, it makes getting your meat to exactly the right temperature. The unit has presets for various meats, although for beef lamb and veal it can be set to the desire done-ness. Fairly easy to use, which is good as the manual is pretty abrupt. I had to do a little searching on the maximum temperature the probes could withstand but the unit will measure to 450 degrees which should be it. And the manufacturer throws in a second probe making it a great value for the price. All in all a handy item to have around the house. If you get around to making one of Paula Deans fool proof rib roasts, try this on it. Fun watching it cook with the oven turned off. Go grab one from Amazon now!
